PENELOPE, IN THE GREEN, SUFFS

Ooooh you're looking cute!

That sunshine looks good on you, and your picnic/beach day/movies in the park dreams are just about to come true. Earlier this year I'd dreamed of performing Alex Bechtel's beautiful piece "Penelope" inspired by Odysseus' famously patient wife, and though that dream was deferred as so many were earlier this year, it's finally time to sing that sucker. If you're in the mood to be moved by music this month, come on out.

Penelope
Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 2

Monday, May 23 @7pm
At the beginning of the pandemic, forced to quarantine in separate cities from his romantic partner, Bechtel began to write music from the point of view of Penelope, Odysseus’ wife in Homer’s “Odyssey." Thoughtful, stirring string-based instrumental pieces combine with powerful rock and pop-inspired musical theatre songs to tell the 10 year tale of the Odyssey from the perspective of one single day in Penelope’s life: the day she hopes will be her last one spent waiting for her husband to return.

In The Green
The New School
May 10-14

I can't tell you how excited I am to watch the Mannes Opera students from The New School perform "In The Green" this week! There's looping, there's additional Hildegard music, there's a big ol cast of incredible singers and I'm honored they're tackling this piece. If you're around NYC, this is your chance to see someone else's take on a thing I made.
