SUMMER SLAPS

Welp.

I don't know what to say. I've been thinking all day about how to begin and I don't know. So, I'm beginning by admitting that I don't know.

Ok, that's something.

I took a quick little trip to Turkey last month and there are "evil eyes" everywhere, these blue symbols on walls and above doorframes and on jewelry in alllll the tchotchke shops. There's something about the name "evil eye" that is kind of scary, unsettling, "don't look at that evil eye!" I guess that's what a name like that is supposed to do, sort of scare you away from engaging with the thing. But they're truly everywhere and they don't actually feel scary, they feel more like a marker of protection and of community.

I think what I'm trying to say is I'm grateful to be in community with you. Our evil eyes are eyeing each other, finding each other out, protecting each other, pointing our gaze towards each other and towards our bright horizon, moving towards it one step at a time. That's something too.

I'm playing around the east coast this summer. If you're in upstate NY, the Berkshires, or New York City I hope to see you some fine evening.

Caffe Lena with The Orchard Project
July 8 @7pm, July 10th @3pm

At the beginning of the pandemic, forced to quarantine in separate cities from his romantic partner, Alex Bechtel began to write music from the point of view of Penelope, Odysseus’ wife in Homer’s “Odyssey." Thoughtful, stirring string-based instrumental pieces combine with powerful rock and pop-inspired musical theatre songs to tell the 10 year tale of the Odyssey from the perspective of one single day in Penelope’s life: the day she hopes will be her last one spent waiting for her husband to return.
